Metro to link suburban, MRTS and bus services
2012-05-17, 15:16:00 IST:
CHENNAI: Everyday, S K Parthasarathy travels 30km to his workplace in Triplicane from suburban Nemilicherry. He takes a train to the Moore Market Complex station and walks nearly 10 minutes to the Park Town MRTS station to board another service to Triplicane . By the time he is at his desk, he is exhausted. For people like him, things could change when metro rail operations begin and they will be able to seamlessly switch from one mode of transport to another. Subways, skywalks, canopied walkways and foot overbridges will be built at metro rail stations close to suburban stations, MRTS stations and bus stations so that "commuters wanting to move from metro to suburban trains or buses will be able to do so without having to step out in the open on the road."

2012-05-17, 05:51:00 IST:
Bengaluru’s roads, already heaving under heavy traffic, have become even more congested since the work on the Metro Rail began, with the elevated tracks and massive stations occupying a good amount of space. It may be all worth it if Namma Metro begins operations and the city gets the rapid mass transport system it badly needs to take the pressure off its roads. While the Metro Rail authorities promise to have Phase I completed by December 2013 there is worry that the litigation over land acquisition and various unresolved issues could push the deadline further, leaving the city in the mess it is today for a lot longer.

CHENNAI: Passengers arriving at Central Railway Station and opting for pre-paid autorickshaws have a hard time as they have to wait long hours to get an auto for their onward journey. The pre-paid auto drivers say that the Metro Rail construction work has taken up most of the space they previously used as a stand, forcing most of them outside the station complex. Kritika, who arrived from Bangalore on the Shatabdi Express at around 11 am, complained about the increased waiting period to get a pre-paid auto. Stating that going around looking for an auto in the hot sun was tough she said, “I waited for about 45 minutes to get an auto. It is not just me, there is a big queue waiting to get autos. I cannot compare the pre-paid auto service here with the system in Bangalore, which is near perfect. Looking for an auto becomes even tougher with luggage and kids in the overcrowded station premises,” she said.
